Waller accepted into Mississippi State Medical Association’s First Physician Leadership Academy

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - This is a news release from Mississippi State Medical Association.

William L. Waller, III, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist in private practice with Hattiesburg Clinic, was recently inducted into the first class of Mississippi State Medical Association's (MSMA) Physician Leadership Academy. The MSMA Physician Leadership Academy was established as part of the association's effort to ensure strong and sustainable physician leadership with organized medicine.

Physicians today face issues that require skills and knowledge that is not part of the curriculum of all medical schools and residency programs. The MSMA Physician Leadership Academy was created to fill this gap by training physicians to become leaders in the healthcare team, in their profession and in their communities.  During the course of nine months, participants gain valuable experience and leadership skills, including training from experts in the areas of conflict management, media and communications and medical advocacy.

Dr. Waller is one of only 11 physicians selected to the academy in its inaugural year, said Charmain Kanosky, executive director of MSMA. Dr. Waller has attended sessions at MSMA's headquarters and will participate in additional sessions at the State Capitol during the 2015 legislative session. Upon completion of the program, he will be honored as a Doctor of Distinction.

“The MSMA Physician Leadership Academy is an intensive training course to mentor and develop physicians with leadership potential,” said Kanosky. “We equip physicians with the skills needed to thrive in today's challenging healthcare arena while empowering future medical leaders of our state.”

Participation in the academy has already exceeded his expectations, providing valuable skills that will positively impact his practice and patients, Dr. Waller said.

Dr. Waller completed a medical degree from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine in Jackson; an internship in internal medicine at St. Mary's Medical Center in San Francisco; a residency in dermatology at Tulane University in New Orleans and a clinical research fellowship in dermatology also at Tulane University.

During medical school, he graduated in the top 15 percent of his class and was inducted into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.  In his final year of residency, Dr. Waller served as Chief Resident and received the Peterkin Award for the most outstanding original research in dermatology.

After residency, Dr. Waller opened a private practice with Hattiesburg Clinic, where he continues to practice.  He received a presidential citation from the American Academy of Dermatology in 2014 for his service as a representative to the American Medical Association.  He was also elected to the Mississippi State Medical Association's Council on Legislation in 2014.  He serves as Secretary of the Mississippi Dermatologic Society.

Dr. Waller is a diplomate of the American Board of Dermatology and a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology.  His professional affiliations include the Mississippi State Medical Association, the Dermatology Foundation, the American Medical Association, the Mississippi Dermatologic Society and the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery.
