FORREST COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - Forrest County circuit clerk Lou Ellen Adams is retiring after 20 years in office and her daughter is one of the candidates who has qualified to succeed her.
Adams has served since 1996. She won a special election that year to fill the unexpired term of former circuit clerk Marian Brown, who died in office.
Previously, Adams had worked as both deputy circuit clerk and deputy chancery clerk. She has served the county for a total of 39 years.
Her daughter, Sherri Reid, has qualified to run as a Republican for circuit clerk. She is a former deputy circuit clerk.
A current deputy circuit clerk, Gwen Wilks, has also qualified to run as a Republican for the circuit clerk position.
"There's a bond between my office and law enforcement and all the other offices in the county and I'll miss that," Adams said. "I'll be the first to tell you I'll miss that and just the public coming and going and I enjoy that," she said.
The deadline for candidates to qualify is Feb. 27.
The Republican primary will be held in August.
