The Southern Pines Animal Shelter has kicked off their  Happy Neuter Year campaign.

They recently received a grant from Pet Smart Charities that is allowing them to offer $20 neuter surgeries for male dogs and cats. Thanks to the grant they will be able to neuter up to 280-male-dogs and cats. The $20-surgeries are available to anyone in the Pine Belt.

Spaying and neutering is one of the most effective ways to reduce the homeless pet population and is safe for puppies and kittens as young as eight to 10 weeks old.

"It is a good thing to fix male pets even though they're not the ones having the puppies and kittens," said Valerie Rachal, SPAS Research and Development. "We find that neutering them will reduce roaming, fighting, and spraying urine to mark their territory."
