The Mississippi Highway Patrol will begin the New Year's Enforcement Period Wednesday night at 6 p.m.
Checkpoints will be set up throughout the area to remove impaired drivers from the roadways. They are encouraging everyone to pre-plan their festivities by having designated drivers or having another way to get home without getting behind the wheel.
"Highway Patrol is going to be out with every available unit here in District 7 and state wide," said Trooper First Class Brent Barfield. "We are asking that you don't drink and drive and if you are going to a social function plan for a designated driver, be aware of your surroundings, and everyone have a safe weekend."
The enforcement period will continue until midnight New Years Day.
