LAMAR COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

The Lamar County Sheriff department has received several calls concerning a phone scam.

Sheriff Danny Rigel said residents have been receiving calls from someone identifying himself as a Sergeant with the department's warrant division. Sheriff Rigel said the man tells the resident that he has a bench warrant for their arrest for failure to appear for jury summons for federal court.

The residents are asked to get a green dot card or vanilla reload network card to satisfy their fine. The caller advises that if a mixup has occurred the resident will be refunded their money at a later date.

Sheriff Rigel wants to remind all residents that the Sheriff Department will never solicit money over the phone.

He said if you would like to verify the authenticity of a phone call you receive, hang up and call your local law enforcement agency directly.

Do not use any phone numbers given to you by the caller.
