LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - Quick response by Jones County firefighters Saturday morning prevented an apartment fire from spreading to other apartments.

Soso, Calhoun and Hebron volunteer firefighters were called to a fire at the Shady School Apartments around 8 a.m. One apartment had been gutted and the fire was threatening several adjoining rooms.

Firemen were able to get it under control in a short time, limiting the fire damage to the one apartment. All 12 in the block sustained smoke damage, however, and residents were evacuated.

Nobody was hurt and no one was home at the apartment when the fire broke out.

The cause is being investigated and early reports indicate it may have resulted from Christmas tree lights that were left on.
