PETAL, MS (WDAM) -

Many Petal families in need have an extra reason to be thankful this holiday season.

Over 200 families and over 400 children were receiving food boxes and Christmas gifts on Thursday and Friday as the Petal Children's Task Force helped make the holidays a little brighter for area families in need.

The Christmas Assistance program was started over 25-years ago and has helped thousands of families during the holiday season.

The non-profit organization works year round helping to assist families with a wide range of services, they are helped by donations from area churches and businesses.

The Forrest County Sheriff's Department was also on hand donating their time loading the items in individual cars and directing traffic flow. Recipients must provide two proofs of residence and fill out the necessary paperwork to receive assistance from the organization.

The Petal Children's Task Force is located at 314 South George Street in Petal.
