HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Santa Claus isn't the only one working overtime to make sure everybody has a happy Christmas. Postal employees are putting in extra hours this holiday season to handle the high volume of cards, letters and packages.
For the last few weeks, letter carriers in the Hattiesburg area have been making Sunday deliveries, and will continue until Dec. 21.
The 40th Ave. Post Office in Hattiesburg is one of 31 locations across the state to extend its retail hours on Saturday, which is the deadline for mailing greeting cards, letters and packages in time for Christmas. It will open from 8:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m.
The Post Office is reminding residents that Dec. 23 is the deadline for sending Christmas packages using Priority Mail Express.
Thursday was the busiest day of the year for deliveries in 2014. The Postal Service is expecting a 12 percent increase in package volume over last year's holiday season.
