Giving a pet as a presents for Christmas may seem like a good idea, but it could mean trouble for the new owner and the pet.

Southern Pines Animal Shelter Manager Ginny Sims urges residents to be responsible when gifting pets. It is important to know that there is a pet owner compatibility before making a commitment.

"Come for a few visits leading up to the holiday at least you are making the selection based on personality, compatibility, and how the animal fits into that life style," Sims said.

According to Sims, it is never a good idea to give a pet as a surprise. Taking care of an animal is a big commitment and can be challenging for someone who doesn't have much free time.

Sims said if you are considering adding a pet to your family during this holiday season check local shelters for that special addition.

"Adopt, don't shop," Sims said.
