HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Dozens of Hattiesburg firefighters and police officers received some homemade Christmas goodies Tuesday morning from more than one dozen Lamar County elementary school students who wanted to show them that they were appreciated.
Firefighters at three stations, along with officers at the Hattiesburg Police Dept. on James Street got cookies and other homemade holiday treats from sixteen 3rd, 4th and 5th grade student council members at Longleaf Elementary School.
It was part of a "Cookies for Courage" initiative at the school.
The students also gave the firefighters and police officers Christmas and thank you cards.
"It felt very good just to tell them Merry Christmas and just to thank them for all they've done for us," said Maggie Gratwick, a 5th grader.
"It was great just to give back to our community," said Quin Sirmon, a 4th grader. "They're so brave to go out there and save people's lives," he said.
"The kids coming by here and surprising us is probably one of the biggest and best things that's been done for us and I know that with the guys that I work with, it's so meaningful to them," said Lt. Stephen Mooney, a firefighter who received cookies at Station No. 6.
The students also sang Christmas songs during lunch at Hattiesburg's Christian Services, Inc.
