Joe's Viewpoint: Pets as gifts

Joe Sciortino Joe Sciortino
HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Now that we are all getting into the holiday spirit and shopping around for the best gifts, we wanted to caution some enthusiastic gift givers. If you intend to purchase a pet for someone, be sure that the recipient is ready for the responsibility. It is true that pets can bring joy and companionship to someone, but according to the pet-friendly resources we checked, giving a pet as a gift though well-intentioned is not the best idea. It is not just the time and energy you are committing them to, but also the expense of bedding, grooming and veterinary care. According to one website, total lifetime costs for a small breed dog can range from $5000 to $8000. That is quite a commitment to make for someone else.

You might want to consider a gift certificate from a shelter or veterinarian so they can participate in the decision and do what's best for them and their new best friend.

This is today's Viewpoint.
