Thanks to several alumni from Columbia High School a piece of sports memorabilia from one of the top sports legends will soon hang in the high school trophy case.
The high School letter jacket that belonged to football great Walter Payton was put up for auction last week in in Chicago. Two of the schools alumni established a go fund me account online to raise money to bid on the jacket. In just three-days they were able to raise more than $4500 which just happened to be enough to win the auction and get the jacket.
"Walter was obviously the greatest runner that ever played in the NFL and just knowing that he came from Columbia and played on the same field that is named after him today, it's an honor for these kids to walk by this trophy case and see things that are from him, his family, and his legacy," said Jay Rayburn, Columbia Elementary School.
