HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Five Mississippi veterans, their families and representatives of the French government gathered at Camp Shelby Tuesday for a ceremony recognizing them for their efforts to liberate France from Nazi occupation in the Second World War.

U.S. Army veterans Adelchi Pilutti of Ocean Springs, John L. Balser of McComb, James B. Jones of Laurel and James H. McBrayer of Brandon, joined U.S. Navy veteran William M. Amos of Hazelhurst in receiving The National Order of the Legion of Honor.

The award is France's highest decoration and is presented for distinguished military service or civic accomplishments.

It's the second time for France to present the award at Camp Shelby. Two years ago, Biloxi Navy veteran Oscar Russell also received the Legion of Honor.
