13th homicide; Hattiesburg man dies after alleged fight

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

A Hattiesburg man has died from injuries sustained in an apparent fight in late November making it the Hub City's 13th homicide of 2014.

According to Forrest County Coroner Butch Benedict, Dexter R. Jones, 50, died Sunday afternoon in the ICU at University Medical Center in Jackson.

“The cause of death is blunt force trauma to the head, and the manner of death has been ruled a homicide,” said Benedict.

Forrest County resident, Christopher Leatherwood, 32, was arrested by Hattiesburg Police after the incident that occurred in the 1000 block of Atlanta Street on November 20th.

Leatherwood was booked in to the Forrest County Jail and charged with aggravated assault, where a $50,000 bond was set.

Leatherwood is still in custody at the county jail.

According to a Hattiesburg police incident report the victim (Jones) and Leatherwood got into an argument over previous incidents and Leatherwood assaulted the victim (Jones), knocking him to the ground and striking his head leaving him unconscious.

At this time the aggravated assault charge for Leatherwood has not been upgraded.

“Once we receive the file, we will review the facts and present it to the grand jury so they can make a determination whether to indict it as a homicide,” said Forrest-Perry County District Attorney Patricia Burchell.
