HPD loses former officer to fight with cancer

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The local law enforcement community lost one of it's on over the weekend.

Former HPD officer Marti Jahnke lost her life over the weekend after a lengthy battle with cancer. She worked for the Hattiesburg Police Department for 10 years before beginning a 15 year career with the Secret Service where she worked for several years under the George W. Bush administration.

Jahnke was highly regarded by her fellow officers at HPD.

"I was fortunate to work with Marti the whole time that she was with the police department. She was an exceptional officer," said Lamar County Sheriff Danny Rigel. "I can't find one person who said anything bad about Marti. Her character was beyond reproach. She had the best attitude, she was always upbeat and influenced a lot of people. I consider myself very fortunate to have served along with her."

Funeral arrangements for Jahnke will be in Gulfport Thursday at First United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 1 - 3 p.m. and the service will be at 3 p.m.
