Keon Howard threw for 167 yards and three touchdowns to lead Laurel to a 29-26 victory over Oxford in the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 5A title game.
Laurel (14-2) led 21-12 at halftime. Oxford pulled within 21-19 after an 8-play touchdown drive near the end of the third quarter.
But a bad snap on a punt attempt with 7:20 remaining gave Laurel the ball on the Chargers' 12. Three plays later, Howard hit Dontario Drummond in the end zone for another touchdown.
Oxford scored on its next drive to pull within 29-26 and then forced a Laurel punt, but the ensuing drive stalled just past midfield as time expired. The Chargers struggled with miscues all night - they were penalized 12 times for 78 yards and had two turnovers.
Oxford (13-2) lost the 5A title game for a second-straight season.
