HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The Hattiesburg Police Department is seeking the public's help in stuffing a truck with Christmas toys for the children that were affected by homicide. The truck is located at Ryan Chevrolet on West Pine Street. The toys will be collected through December 17th, 2014.
They are also asking that the toys come in the original packaging and donated without gift wrapping so they can go to the appropriate aged child. The Christmas gifts will be wrapped by the staff of the police department before being donated at the Christmas party on December 22nd. Monetary donations are also being accepted in the form of a gift certificate which will be used to purchase items to be donated.
In the past, they had "Shop With A Cop" opportunity but this year, they opted for stuffing the truck as a means to reach these deserving and often forgotten children. Hattiesburg Police Department spokesman Lt. Jon Traxler says that it's just a way of really helping those children see that the police are not just there during the tragic time of their life, but are also here trying to bring them a little Christmas cheer.
"We love to get out and meet the public and talk to the public and reach out to them to help them out." said Traxler "We have different things throughout the year but Christmas is a real big time that we try to reach out to the children especially."
They are especially looking for donations for teen boys and girls between the ages of 14 through 17 years old.
