Hattiesburg group helps children with reading

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Pine Belt 360 will be donating over 2,000 books to four different school districts in the Pine Belt area.

Executive Director of Pine Belt 360 Van Jones said, “

ue to the Third Grade Gate, the state of Mississippi has passed a law stating that boys and girls who are in the third grade and cannot pass the reading assessment on the third grade level will be retained in the spring of 2015, so we are working diligently to make sure that is a small number here in the Pine Belt.”

Pine Belt 360 plans to distribute books to second and third graders by mid-December so the children will be able to have new reading material over the holiday vacation.

The group plans to do a similar program in the spring so that students may have books to read over the summer break.

The schools include Hattiesburg Public Schools, Columbia School district, Longleaf School in Lamar County, North Forrest Elementary, and Earl Travillion Elementary.
