New Orleans, La.- No. 9 William Carey University used a 15-0 run to close the first half and take command of the game as they picked up their second straight win over a NAIA Top 15 opponent, defeating longtime rival No. 13 Xavier University, 69-58 at the Convocation Center.

Baskets were few and far in between in the first half as the teams combined for just 12 points over the first 10 minutes of play. With the Gold Rush holding a 17-14 lead with 4:34 to play, Leo Garret scored six straight points to spark a 15-0 run by the Crusaders to close the half up 29-17.

Xavier scored four straight points to start the half then the WCU defense clamped down and limited the Gold Rush to just three points for the next 10 minutes as they built a 40-24 lead. Xavier made one last push late cutting the lead to nine but the Crusaders made 12 of 14 from the charity stripe to secure the win.

Cory Jackson (JR/Biloxi, Miss.) led WCU with 15 points and 8 rebounds. Leo Garret added 10 points. Jarvis Thobodeaux led the Gold Rush and all scorers with 16 points.

WCU returns to action on Saturday as they travel to Mobile, Alabama, to take on Spring Hill College in non-conference action. Tip-off is set for 4 pm at the Outlaw Center.
