Hattiesburg police have arrested one person in connection to the city's 12th homicide of 2014.

According to Hattiesburg Police Lt. Jon Traxler, Jamarcus Pettigrew, 23, was arrested late Sunday night and charged with hindering prosecution, rendering criminal assistance in connection with the shooting death of Nathaniel Alexander, 39.

Forrest County Coroner Butch Benedict stated Alexander died in the operating room at Forrest General Hospital shortly before 11:00 p.m. Saturday from what appears to be multiple gunshot wounds.

According to Benedict, the body will be sent to the Mississippi State Crime Lab for an autopsy.

Hattiesburg police responded to the scene of shooting assisting AAA ambulance service at 312 West 4th Street shortly before 9:00 p.m. Saturday.

Upon arrival, police found Alexander suffering from what appeared to be multiple gunshot wounds outside the residence. He was transported to Forrest General Hospital where he later died.

Witnesses on the scene stated that the incident was a drive by shooting, and multiple shots were fired.

Police officers searched the street and front yard of the home with flashlights inside the taped off area along 4th Street.

Blue lights reflecting off shell casings that covered the roadway were collected by members of the Hattiesburg Crime Scene Unit.

It is unclear at this time if the victim lived at the residence where the shooting occurred, but according to Traxler, he did know people at the house.

According to Traxler, the investigation is still ongoing and other arrests are pending.
