Shooting scene Shooting scene

The City of Hattiesburg's 12th homicide victim of 2014 has been identified as Nathaniel Alexander, 39, according to Forrest County Coroner Butch Benedict.

Benedict stated the victim died in the operating room at Forrest General Hospital shortly before 11:00 p.m. Saturday.

According to Benedict, the body will also be sent to the Mississippi State Crime Lab for an autopsy.

Hattiesburg police responded to the scene of shooting at 312 West 4th Street around 9:00 p.m.

Upon arrival, police found a victim suffering from what appeared to be multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was transported to Forrest General Hospital where he later died.

Witnesses on the scene stated that the incident was a drive by shooting, and multiple shots were fired.

Police officers searched the street and front yard of the home inside the taped off area along 4th Street.

Blue lights reflecting off shell casings that covered the roadway were collected by members of the Hattiesburg Crime Scene Unit.

It is unclear at this time if the victim lived at the residence where the shooting occurred.

A person of interest was taken in for questioning, but the investigation is still ongoing.

If you have any information regarding the shooting contact Hattiesburg Police or Metro Crime Stoppers at 601-582-STOP.
