JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - Mom and pop stores across the country are being celebrated this weekend as part of Small Business Saturday. It began five years ago as a way of focusing attention on the advantages of shopping at traditional small stores.
Among the family-owned businesses enjoying the increased emphasis on shopping local is Landrum's Homestead and Village south of Laurel. It's hosting the 31st annual Christmas at the Village, which focuses on old-fashioned Christmas shopping in a late 19th century southern village setting.
"I know there are box stores and chain stores, but a lot of people are coming back to small business and we do promote that," said Susan Landrum of Landrum's Homestead and Village. "We promote other businesses in the area, restaurants and such. People want that personal touch," she said.
Landrum's Christmas at the Village will also be open from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday.
