HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - When frying a turkey this Thanksgiving there are a few safety tips that one should know.
The local fire marshall gave tips about how to properly fry a turkey.
The person needs to be sure they have got a good location outdoors away from any structures because of the potential for spill hazard. Rule number one is to never try to fry a frozen turkey.
"You want to make sure that the turkey is completely thawed out. A half thawed turkey will cause the oil to splatter," said Hattiesburg Fire Department Battalion Chief and Fire Marshall Johnny Jackson. "You want to consider the weight and size of the turkey by using extreme caution when replacing or removing the turkey from the fryer."
Also, never leave the turkey unattended because the vapors can ignite if they're heated about it's cooking temperature. Lastly, propane turkey fryers must be used outdoors because of the flammability.
