PETAL, MS (WDAM) - Many Petal families have an extra reason to be thankful this holiday season. The Petal Children's Task Force Office gave Thanksgiving dinner boxes to needy families with children in the Petal school district on Tuesday.

"As you can see we've got boxes that are filled that we are giving to them so they will have a happy Thanksgiving," said Demaris Lee of the Petal Children's Task Force.

The boxes included a turkey, celery, onions, eggs, rolls and desserts.

“We have 150 boxes made up," Lee said. “We have a church that is giving out some of the boxes... delivering them to the people tonight, but we're having the others are coming and picking their boxes up."

Local law enforcement donated their time to help direct traffic and load vehicles.

“The great thing about it is that it gives us a way to give back to the community that we serve, you know,” said Patrol Captain Glen Moore. “We all live in this community, but it's a great opportunity to come out and help the people and the guys actually enjoy coming out and interacting with the public in a different light than we normally do.”

The registration period for Thanksgiving has ended, but the organization intends to do a similar event for the Christmas holidays.

For a family to qualify they must be pre-approved, live in the Petal school district, and be able to show two forms of ID.
