HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

One person is in custody after a shooting incident in Hattiesburg ended peacefully Saturday night.

According to Hattiesburg Police Department Lt. Jon Traxler, shortly after 6:00 p.m. officers received a call of person acting erratic and discharging a firearm on the front porch of a residence located at 144 west 5th Street.

Upon officers arrival the subject went inside and locked the door and would not speak with officers.

Multiple attempts by officers to negotiate with the subject and get him to come out did not work.

Police cars as well as AAA Ambulance blocked sections of 5th Street as the incident was underway.

Forrest County Sheriff's Deputies were also called to the scene to assist Hattiesburg police.

Just before 8:00 p.m. officers then met with family members and constructed a plan to make entry into the residence.

Officers stacked one-by-one at the front of the house, and went in with weapons drawn.

The subject was taken into custody without incident inside the residence.

The suspect was the only person in the residence at the time. As he was removed from the house he continued to scream at officers and emergency workers.

He was transported by ambulance for an evaluation.

Traxler stated the weapon used in the incident was recovered by officers on scene.
