Movember ends, changing the face of men's health issue in Jones County

JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

Over the last 30-days or so, men across Jones County have been participating in efforts to raise awareness of men's health issues by letting their beards grow. Movember in Jones County ended Friday November 21, 2014 as all the competitors gathered at the Advanced Technology Center in Howard Technology Park to show what a month's worth of beard growth looks like.

The closing ceremonies included finalist giving the judges one last look of their beards and moustaches to the judges. There were winners from a variety of categories such as: Best Moustache, Best Waxed Moustache, Most Unique Moustache and Longest Moustache. Awards were handed out and lunch was served to attendees.

Over a dozen businesses, industry and community leaders took part in this year's event.

Movember is an initiative dedicated to men's health issues because men usually neglect going for annual check-ups and screenings. It brings attention to health programs for men and attempts to educate the importance of testing for such things as prostate and testicular cancer and mental health issues.
