MHP instruct drivers on deer protocols

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - It is a common occurrence in South Mississippi to see a deer standing alongside the road. Unfortunately, motorists often hit deer that attempt to cross busy roads.

Mississippi Highway Patrol Sgt. Brent Barfeild said there are several things to remember when a deer crosses your path.

According to Barfeild, if you hit a deer first be sure that you and your passengers are safe, and pull over to the right shoulder of the road. Contact local authorities immediately if your vehicle is suffering extensive damage.

“The law says that you have to contact law enforcement in the event that it's greater than $500 worth of damage," Barfield said. "That is state law."

If you leave the scene, it is very difficult for officers to verify a report, according to Barfield.

Barfield said,"We would like to see you stay on scene so our troopers can investigate the accident there on the scene.”
