This is a news release from the Laurel School District

After a nine month deployment on the USS George H.W. Bush, Navy Chief Logistics Specialist Aaron Winn planned a surprise reunion for his three children. With the help of his wife, Andrea and Nora Davis Magnet School teachers and administration, Winn was the star of the show at a special assembly where he was reunited with his children, four-year-old twins Jamari and Samyra and seven-year-old DeAndre.

“By having the reunion at school, it just added an extra element of surprise,” Andrea Winn said. “We wanted to include their friends in the excitement and create a moment that we will all remember.”

As the children were brought on stage, their dad, dressed in his uniform, appeared from behind the curtain. When the children recognized he was their dad, they ran to give him hugs and kisses.

DeAndre, a second grader at Nora Davis Magnet School, said he was really excited to see his dad, and have him back at home.

“My dad is the best. He gives me piggyback rides, and he takes care of my family,” DeAndre said. “I missed him so much it felt like he was gone one hundred trillion billon days.”

During Aaron Winn's time aboard the aircraft carrier, his crew assisted with air missions over Afghanistan and combat support missions against Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) forces. The Carrier Strike Group traveled nearly 74,000 nautical miles during their nine-month deployment. The carrier arrived at homeport on Saturday, Nov. 15 at Norfolk, Va.

Now that his dad is back at home, DeAndre said he is looking forward to spending time together playing video games. But before the video games and piggyback rides, DeAndre said he just wants to tell his dad about the Veterans Day card he created especially for him while he was away serving the country.

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported there are now 12 cases of West Nile Virus in our state Thursday morning. Although, every case is serious, that number pales in comparison, to the 247 cases in 2012. Still, you have to put a human face onto these figures to really know what this virus is capable of doing.
