International Education Week allows students to share their culture

The English Language Institute at the University of Southern Mississippi has been teaching the world English since 1947.

To celebrate the diversity that the ELI brings, USM recognizes International Education Week each year.

"Altogether we have 17 countries represented this term," said Ann Morris, program manager of the English Language Institute.

Students and the public were invited on Wednesday to see these countries through the eyes of their international classmates. Students from various countries that are studying English at USM shared their cultures with those in attendance.

An estimated 15 percent of students enroll at USM after finishing the program. Many others go on to study at other universities around the nation. The university receives students from abroad but also sends students from USM to other countries for short-term study abroad programs.

"It's important to find out about our world," said Morris. "Even for young children, to find out that there are people who live in other countries who are very similar to us but they speak other languages and have many different customs and traditions."
