After Hours Flu Clinic offer no out of pocket cost flu shots

PETAL, MS (WDAM) - This is a press release from Southeast Mississippi Rural Health Initiative

Hattiesburg, MS: The Petal School Clinic, a unit of Southeast Mississippi Rural Health Initiative, Inc., is offering a no out of pocket cost flu vaccine for students. Vaccines will be given by appointment only “after hours” in the clinic from 4 p.m.- 7 p.m. on Thursday, November 13, 2014 at 36 Panther Stadium Dr. Petal, MS.

This clinic will be open to the students of Petal. For those students who are not covered by private insurance, they will receive the vaccine with no out of pocket cost. A flu vaccine is recommended for everyone ages 6 months and older. The school clinic will be using the quadrivalent vaccine, which is available in an injectable form and a nasal mist form, while supplies last.

Influenza, or the flu, is a contagious disease that can be spread by coughing, sneezing, and close contact. Flu vaccinations are important around the wintertime. In the United States the flu typically spreads during October through May. It usually takes the flu vaccination about two weeks to begin acting as a protectant; but the vaccination lasts several months. With students being around each other day in and day out, you can never be too protective against the flu.

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported there are now 12 cases of West Nile Virus in our state Thursday morning. Although, every case is serious, that number pales in comparison, to the 247 cases in 2012. Still, you have to put a human face onto these figures to really know what this virus is capable of doing.
