USM constructing new parking lot

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - People driving to Southern Miss will soon have dozens of new places to park their cars on the southwest part of the campus. A new 148-space parking lot is being built just across the the street from the College of Arts and Letters.

It will have an elevated surface and plenty of lighting, according to Chris Crenshaw, associate vice-president for facilities, planning and management at USM.

Construction began about two months ago. Phase one should be complete by the end of December. Phase two is scheduled to be finished by March.

"We have parking scattered across campus, but being able to provide parking in a convenient location like this, where our students have access to their academic buildings and don't have to walk as far, that's an important thing," Crenshaw said. "So, we're excited about when this project will be complete."

Crenshaw said it will be zoned for faculty, staff and open parking.
