Joe's Viewpoint: Veteran's Day

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - When I think about how much our veterans mean to me and why I am so grateful for their service, I don't just think about how they have kept us all safe. I also think about my chosen profession and how they have made it possible for me to make a living and support a family. The Freedom of the Press which is protected by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution provides the media industry in which I work the necessary rights to operate in the best interest of the public. Without these rights we would not be able to share certain information without fear of censorship or punishment.

In many places around the world this crucial freedom of speech is not availed to the press or to the individual for that matter. Yet it is truly the expression of individuals across our great nation that makes us so unique and dynamic.

These brave men and women and their families have sacrificed and they willingly put everything on the line to protect our nation from those who wish to harm us or take away our liberties. They have guarded our freedoms on the front lines around the world under fire and to loss of limb. I can think of no greater way to show love for your country and what it stands for than to put your life on the line so that others can live, enjoy freedom and pursue our dreams without worry.

Thank you to all veterans for being heroic enough to stand for us through war times and peace. You honor us with your awesome bravery. We should honor our veterans by enjoying these freedoms and making the most of the opportunities afforded us by their hard work and protection.

This is today's viewpoint.
