Fire destroys two-story apartment building in Jones County

JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

This is a news release from the Jones County Fire Council

And early morning fire Tuesday, November 11, had firefighters in Jones County searching for three unaccounted for occupants of a two-story apartment building, located behind a home at 260 Creel Road in the Shelton community of Southwest Jones County.

At 4 a.m., fire units from Southwest, South Jones, and Boggy Volunteer Fire Departments were dispatched to the structure fire. Upon arrival, the firefighters found the approximately 2,000 square-foot barn shaped building, which had been converted into a two-story apartment, fully involved in flames, and almost on the ground. The cool temperatures and heat from the fire created such a cloud of steam and smoke, that firefighters had a difficult time searching the ruble. The occupants were never found.

The owners, who live in the home in front of the apartment building, were awakened by a loud explosion, and discovered the building on fire. The apartment was deemed a total loss.

The fire remains under investigation by Jones County Sheriff's Department Fire Investigator Sgt. Scott Gable.

Also responding to the fire scene were Jones County Fire Coordinator Dan McKenna, and Investigator Wayne Black with the Jones County District Attorney's Office.
