Wreck closes part of Evelyn Gandy Parkway

PETAL, MS (WDAM) - A Monday evening wreck closed one section of the Evelyn Gandy Parkway and sent one driver to the hospital.

The Forrest County Sheriff's Department said the westbound lanes between Old Richton and Leeville Roads were blocked. The eastbound lanes are open.

According to the department, an 18-wheeler and a Jeep were involved in a wreck near that location, and the accident is under investigation.

Eyewitnesses said the Jeep was stopped at a red light when the 18-wheeler struck the vehicle from behind and knocked it across the shoulder into the woods.

According to officials, the driver of the jeep was transported to Forrest General Hospital in serious condition, and the driver of the 18-wheeler had minor injuries.
