LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - Mississippi Power is warning customers of scam artists that have targeted the company's customers for personal and banking information.
Many of the scam artists have posed as billing agents who have asked for money to pay overdue bills, threatening to cut off the customers' power if it is not paid immediately.
Mississippi Power, in a press release on Wednesday, said they would "never call customers asking them for personal or banking information."
The power company said their field representatives are uniformed and travel in company vehicles marked with the company logo, so customers will be able to easily recognize whether the person is a scam artist or a company employee. Field representatives also carry a badge that includes photo identification, name and company logo.
Mississippi Power also posts warnings of fraud such as this recent scam to their social media pages, which can be found on both Facebook and Twitter.
The company encourages victims of this scam to hang up and report the call to local law enforcement as well as Mississippi Power at 1-800-532-1502.
