JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -  Empireonline.com confirmed Thursday morning that actor Matthew McConaughey is eyeing a role for Gary Ross's new project, The Free State of Jones.

The director, most famously noted for his work on The Hunger Games, has entered talks with the star for the Civil War saga.

The movie will take a new spin on the life of Newton Knight, who led one of the most famous rebellions in the American Civil War.

Knight, a Mississippian and confederate recruit, created the Free State of Jones. He and his group of deserters organized to protect their area from crippling tax collection and Confederate authorities.

It has not been announced when the movie will premiere, or if the movie will be filming in Jones County.
