A Hattiesburg math teacher is counting his blessings after winning thousands of dollars Monday in an annual charity event for the ARC of Mississippi. Rick Muli teaches at Sacred Heart High School and Tuesday, he was adding up all the congratulatory comments from students and fellow teachers after his golf ball, number 89, was closest to the hole in the 10th annual golf ball drop at Canebrake Country Club.

The event raised more than $60,000 for the ARC, which helps people with cognitive, intellectual and developmental disabilities. And as winner, Muli took home $20,000.

"I have a special needs niece who is involved in ARC and has been for the last two years," Muli said. "She's a student at Thames Elementary and has wonderful teachers, facilities, opportunities and we've seen a tremendous growth in my niece as a result of the work that not only Thames, but ARC has been able to do with her," he said.

Muli said this was his third or fourth year to buy a ticket for the ball drop.
