Pine Belt voters go to the polls

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

A steady stream of folks were at the  voting precinct at Thames Elementary when the polls opened at 7 a.m.

Key races of interest for Forrest County voters are the United States Senate race between incumbent Thad Cochran and Travis Childers. The U.S. House of Representative race pitting incumbent Steven Palazzo against five other candidates and the 12th District Circuit Court Judge race with incumbent Bob Helfrich being opposed by attorney Chad Shook.

"I want them to get out and vote," said Sue Polk, Forrest County Election Commissioner. "It's an honor and a privilege to vote in America. Even though it's not a big election, I'm begging Forrest County residents to get out and vote."

This is the first general election in Mississippi where identification will be required to vote.

Polls close at 7 p.m.

Following a school-record 55 wins and run that ended in an 8-7 loss in the NJCAA national championship, Jones County Junior College softball is eager to open the 2018 season on February 3. Coming that close to the school’s first national title serves as motivation enough for the Lady Bobcats. Regardless, expectations are always high for coach Chris Robinson’s teams – JCJC is a combined 105-12 the last two seasons.
