Facebook helps land arrest in Laurel burglary case

JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - Thanks to Facebook, a Laurel man is in custody in connection to a burglary and breaking and entering case.

Troy Cooley, Jr. was arrested Sunday after deputies with the Jones County Sheriff's Department received tips from a resident that some of the items which had been stolen from their home had been posted on the internet for sale.

Upon further investigation, authorities found that the stolen property was on the “Jasper and Jones County Sell & Trade” site of Facebook. It was being sold by an individual going by the name “Slim Goodie” who turned out to be Troy Cooley, Jr.

The advertisement on the Facebook site has since been removed; however, pictures were made for evidence.

Cooley was arrested and taken to the Jones County Jail. During his initial appearance, bond was revoked because he was out on a previous charge of aggravated assault.

Cooley is now facing charges of burglary-breaking and entering of an occupied dwelling and possession of a controlled substance.

Stolen items included a 42” television, an HP laptop with case, two memory devices, a black bag of assorted medications, three bluetooth devices, a Galaxy tablet, a Playstation 3 game console, two pairs of shoes, a CD player and a Playstation PSP.

The combined value of the stolen property was over $2,695.00.
