Foreign languages and literatures faculty member honored at MFLA conference

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Keltoum Rowland, an instructor of French in The University of Southern Mississippi Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, received the Post Secondary Educator of Excellence award from the Mississippi Foreign Language Association at its conference Oct. 23 in Louisville, Miss.

At the conference, Rowland presented the program "Recruiting the Next Foreign Language Major" along with her department colleagues Cynthia Baertich and Luisa Garrido Baez.

At Southern Miss, Rowland teaches undergraduate French classes and is the faculty advisor of L'Association Française de USM (French club) and the Honorary Consul of France for Mississippi.

    The Wayne County School District has received a $900,000 grant from the state for a new academy to help students who may have fallen behind. The school district says the STAR Academy is a "drop-out prevention" and "catch-up" type program that will be implemented in fall of 2017.
