PETAL, MS (WDAM) - A nationally renowned historical interpreter and performer visited the 7th graders of Petal Middle School on Tuesday.
As part of "America Lives: History Brought to Life," Darci Tucker made history come alive for the students. A grant through the Petal Education Foundation made the event possible.
"I actually travel all over the country performing as historical figures for students," said Darci Tucker, teaching artist. "Because, for me, that's the most exciting way to teach. When kids hear history through the eyes of the people who actually lived it, it means so much more to them."
In November, the students will complete a project as part of the "traveling trunk show." They will choose a historical figure to research and then embody the character, dressing and speaking like them for a presentation.
"It's just been a great experience so far for our students," said Cathy Lee, 7th grade U.S. History teacher. "You could see them sitting on the edge of their seats, waiting to hear the next thing."
