COLUMBIA, MS (WDAM) - Law enforcement from several Pine Belt agencies were in Columbia for a domestic violence and human trafficking seminar Thursday afternoon.
The seminar was put together by Columbia senior Mary Holt Mock and her mentor Dr. Kay Bennett. Mock is bringing awareness to human trafficking as part part of her senior project at Columbia High School.
Also at the seminar was Marilyn Howell with the Domestic Abuse Shelter of Hattiesburg and Laurel. She was there to bring awareness to domestic violence and stalking and bring officers what to look for in domestic violence situations.
"I want everyone to know this is not only an international problem," said Mock. "It happens here in Columbia as well as Mississippi."
"This is Domestic Violence Awareness Month,.We want the officers to understand the liability issues as well as have an increased understanding on shelter services and what we offer to the community," said Howell.
About 20 officers attended the session.
