LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - A special meeting was held by the Laurel City Council Monday to vote on a contractor for the 2014 Overlay Project.
Council members voted 5 to 1 for Walters Construction. Laurel Mayor Johnny Magee said by law they have to go with the qualified contractor that has the lowest and best bid, and in this case Walters Construction Company was the lowest.
"This bid I think is somewhere in the neighborhood of $680,000, the other company I think was $690,000, so ten, eleven thousand dollars difference," said Mayor Magee. "It'll be several streets; the people of Laurel will notice a good, smooth ride on several streets after this is over."
Mayor Magee said repaving of several Laurel streets will begin by the end of the week.
