LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - Laurel Mayor Johnny Magee issued a proclamation on Friday October 10, 2014 declaring October as Domestic Violence Awareness month.
The event was held in the rotunda at Laurel City Hall in an effort to bring attention to the problem of domestic violence. He met with dozens of social workers , counselors and survivors of domestic violence.
According to the most recent study by the Violence Policy Center, Mississippi ranks 5thin the nation in the rate of women murdered by men. Over the past two decades or so, the nationwide rate has dropped by 26%.
According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, the first Domestic Violence Awareness Month was observed in October 1987, followed by the passing of the Domestic Violence Awareness Month commemorative legislation by the U.S. Congress in 1989.
