Two Youth Challenge officials fired by Camp Shelby

FORREST COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - Two officials with the Camp Shelby Youth Challenge Academy have been fired, according to Major Deidre Smith.

Smith did not give reasoning for the release of the two officials, saying it was a “personnel matter.”

Lt. Col. Tim Powell, public relations director for the Mississippi Army National Guard, said the replacements will be announced in a news conference next week.

Smith said the firings did not have to do with the arrest of former cafeteria director Jerry Howard, who allegedly stole food from the program to use at his Hattiesburg restaurant. However, the release does come less than three weeks after 27 cadets walked away from the base and five cadets were arrested in what Forrest County Sheriff Billy McGee called the largest incident in Youth Challenge Academy history.

Officials with Camp Shelby would not confirm if recent issues were connected to the firing of the two officials.
