JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - Twice a year the Jones County Sheriff's Department has a physical training test.
"We're only going to perform the way we train and since 2008 the Jones County Sheriff's Department has had a training program," said Sheriff Alex Hodge.
The PT test consists of push-ups and a mile and a half timed run. All sworn deputies must complete a certain amount of push-ups depending on their age and also complete the run in a certain time.
"We don't make it optional for them I want them to know where they're at, I want them to know their physical condition, I want them to know their limitations," said Sheriff Hodge.
Deputies must also do a Law Fit Obstacle Course.
"They're coming out of a car, they're chasing a suspect, they're having to go through numerous obstacles in order to be able to track down and make the arrest of a fleeing suspect," said Sheriff Hodge. "You can't train enough and these people they give up their time when they could be off right now and going home. They give up their time to be able to better prepare themselves to be able to serve the people of Jones County and go home to their family at night."
