HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Animal lovers gathered at Town Square Park in downtown Hattiesburg over the weekend to ask for protection over their pets..
Pet Owner, Delia Dabbs said, " I brought my pet to get her blessed be cause I loved her."
The event was hosted by Main Street United Methodist Church. It celebrates the Feast Day of St. Frances of the Assisi, the patron saint of animals. During the service, pet owners received a prayer for their beloved animals and were given a pendant charm for collars.
"This is special, we love our pets, they're just like family. It's super they were able to put this together and bless our four-legged friends," Angela Davis-Morris added.
Todd Watson is the executive pastor at Main Street Baptist Church. He said, "there are so many people in town, especially in downtown whose pets are part of their families that wanted to bless not only the pets, but bless them as part of the community experience. Main Street tries to be a good neighbor, and so this is one of our ways to do that."
The service also featured music, food and a costume contest for pets. Proceeds from the food sold was split between the Southern Pines Animal Shelter and the Hub City Humane Society.
