Trauma conference held in Laurel

Crossroads in Laurel. Crossroads in Laurel.
LAUREL, MS (WDAM) -  Issues with trauma and its affect on people was the focus of a conference held in Laurel Tuesday.

Crossroads Counseling Center held the workshop to bring awareness of mental health issues to the community.

Leaders and professionals were on hand so they can identify and understand the process and also what avenues of help that are available for issues stemming from traumatic experiences.

The event featured psychiatrists and psychologist specializing in a variety of problems including depression, anxiety and fear.

Darren Dickens said that those people dealing with traumas, are sometimes unaware they are being affected by it.

We want people to understand that it's not just a major event such as a terrorist attack or losing a home in a fire, obviously these are traumas but there can be smaller traumas as well,” said Dickens, “We want to be able to offer people quality of life and that's what  we're trying to present and educate people about, is that we don't have to be bound or we don't have to be held captive by these situations.”

It's estimated that 75% of people have been or will be affected by trauma at some point in their life.
