Hattiesburg Zoo Announces Havard Pest Control Sponsorship

This is a news release from the Hattiesburg Zoo:

HATTIESBURG — The Hattiesburg Convention Commission is pleased to announce that the Hattiesburg Zoo is the recipient of a $32,000 sponsorship from Havard Pest Control for a hands on, nature-based playground geared towards children ages 2-6.  This new area will be called the Bug Hub presented by Havard Pest Control and is to be located behind the Chilean Flamingo exhibit near the south lake of the Zoo.   A groundbreaking ceremony for this new development will take place on Tuesday, October 14 at 10:30 a.m.

“Havard Pest Control's sponsorship of this new addition to the Zoo helps continue our efforts to make it one of Mississippi's favorite attractions,” said Rick Taylor, Executive Director of the Hattiesburg Convention Commission. “Their long history of community involvement makes them a great partner in our efforts to improve the quality of life for local residents while also bringing visitors to this unique treasure here in Hattiesburg.”

The Bug Hub will be open for play in the spring of 2015 as part of the Zoo's annual Birthday Bash celebration.  Several of the playground's components will pay homage to the sponsoring entity, Havard Pest Control, including a sliding “ant” hill built on artificial turf and pathways that follow the travel patterns of insects, arachnids and everyone's favorite, the love bug.  Resin logs will encourage crawling and exploring while wooden stumps provide a great launching pad for young ones.  A life-sized spider web for climbing will also be featured and the playground's resident snail will serve as the perfect hiding spot during a fun game of tag.

“Havard is grateful to be given the opportunity to partner with the Hattiesburg Zoo.  Havard has been part of the Hattiesburg community since 1947 and calls Hattiesburg home,” said the Havard family. “Once we visited the Zoo, this was an easy decision for us to make.  The Zoo is a wonderful asset to Hattiesburg and if you haven't visited lately, you need to make plans to do so.”

The space is designed to provide entertainment while educating the Zoo's littlest guests on some of the world's smallest creatures.  Parents will enjoy relaxing in the shade while hoping that time spent at the Bug Hub results in a happily exhausted youngster.  Future development of the space includes a nearby concession stand.

Those interested in sponsoring expansion projects at the Hattiesburg Zoo may contact Kelly Ellis, Zoo Manager, at 601-268-3220.

The Hattiesburg Zoo is a Hattiesburg Convention Commission Facility, in partnership with the City of Hattiesburg and the Hattiesburg Tourism Commission.  Since 1991, the Hattiesburg Convention Commission has been developing and operating tourism-related facilities for the Hattiesburg area.  For more information, visit www.ZooHattiesburg.com <http://www.zoohattiesburg.com/>  or contact us at 601.268.3220.
