German culture celebrated at St. John's Oktoberfest

A Hattiesburg church hosted hundreds of visitors Saturday as the congregation celebrated German food and music during their 36th annual Oktoberfest.

The event raises funds for the church's mission work.

Visitors dined on bratwurst, sauerkraut and German potato salad, while listening to traditional music played on tuba and accordion.

Many church members are from Germany or are of German descent.

Oktoberfest began as a royal wedding celebration in Munich, Germany in 1810.
